Words Have Power
Unlike the mythologies of other religions, where the world was created after a series of violent battles by the gods, the Judeo-Christian understanding is much different. God did nothing violent - He merely spoke - ( “In the beginning, God said,”…) He created the world with words.
Words have power. They have the power to create and the power to destroy. If you have ever had someone say to you, “I love you,” then you understand how that is very edifying. On the other side, you probably know how ugly words can break a person in half.
Choose your words very carefully - once they leave your mouth or your pen they have inherent power.
Freedom of speech and freedom of the press are very important, but they are not their own ends - they are means to another goal: peace and justice. If words are not, in themselves, peaceful or just, then they defeat the true goal of communication.
