T.J. Pillion - Medicine Man Music
One of the best bass players I’ve ever played with is T.J. Pillion, whose path seemed to cross mine at important times in my life and my formation as a Catholic.
T.J. and I first met in Steubenville, OH as undergraduates at Franciscan University. While the school was building more dorms, T.J. was living in the remote student housing at the hospital across the street from the house I rented. I learned that he was from Burke, VA, and we got off to a good start.
We started playing with drummer Paul Spencer, violinist Luc Dauvin, and guitarist Mike Ofca. Mike helped us put a demo together, and the band played a few nice gigs in the year that we were together ‘95-’96.
But back to Mr. Pillion: T.J. is a great musician for two reasons: 1) He is simply, flat-out, funky with great time, and 2) He is thoughtful and empathetic. I enjoy his company tremendously for his educated conversation on philosphy and music.
T.J. is finishing up his medical schooling right now in San Antonio which makes him one of the only people funkygroove-to-funkygroove more degreed than I am.
T.J. recently released some some songs, one being a cover of my tune about St. Francis of Assisi titled “Road to Gubbio.”
